 UWE RADA/JOURNALIST ON URBAN DEVELOPMENT/BERLIN
Uwe Rada, born in 1963, studied German philology and history, worked as a forklift truck and lorry driver and writes since 1992 as an editor on city development for the Berlin based newspaper taz. 1997 his book „capital of displacement, Berlin’s future between quarter and metropolis“ was published, which was followed in 2001 by „Berliner savages. How the east comes into the west“ which the Sueddeutsche newspaper commented: „When you read Rada’s book, you get an idea of the political and cultural geography of Berlin, of its actual condition. In the official perception Berlin is the western metropolis situated furthest east, yet it’s informal rhythm already follows a whole different set of rules. Berlin actually is the eastern metropolis situated furthest west and a hotbed for just about any type of highly temporary economic and life forms (…) a very necessary book.“

Geboren 1963, Studium der Germanistik und Geschichte, Gabelstaplerfahrer und Lkw-Fahrer, arbeitet seit 1992 als Redakteur für Stadtentwicklung bei der taz. Nach dem 1997 erschienenen Buch "Hauptstadt der Verdrängung, Berliner Zukunft zwischen Kiez und Metropole" erschien 2001 "Berliner Barbaren. Wie der Osten in den Westen kommt", zu dem es in der Süddeutschen Zeitung hieß: „Wer Radas Buch gelesen hat, bekommt eine Ahnung von der politischen und kulturellen Geografie Berlins, von seiner tatsächlichen Lage. Nach offizieller Lesart die am weitesten östlich gelegene Metropole des Westens folgt
sein informeller Rhythmus schon jetzt ganz anderen Regeln. Berlin ist die am meisten westlich gelegene Metropole des Ostens und ein Tummelplatz für so gut wie jede Spielart höchst provisorischer Wirtschafts- und Lebensformen. (...) ein in hohem Maße notwendiges Buch."
Berlin as a border city – the unrecognised chance?
About the unrecognised role of Berlin as a border city. „There was always a gap between what Berlin aimed to be and what it really is. Since the fall of the wall Berlin claims to fulfil the roles of a service industry city, capital, hub between east and west and Olympia city. But Berlin is a border city (…) and border cities are hybrids, everything else is a village.“

Über Berlins bisher nicht anerkannte Rolle als Grenzstadt. „Es gab schon immer eine Divergenz zwischen dem, was Berlin sein wollte und dem, was es tatsächlich ist. Seit dem Fall der Mauer beanspruchte Berlin Dienstleistungsstadt, Hauptstadt, Dreh- und Angelpunkt zwischen Ost und West und Olympiastadt zu sein. Berlin ist aber eine Grenzstadt (...) und Grenzstädte sind Hybride, alles andere ist ein Dorf.
